Savings... when all prices go up!

In recent months, there has been much talk about prices and the economy. Despite it becoming increasingly difficult to save money, with oil at record highs, rising supermarket prices, and saturation of global supply chains, we have exceptional news for you: there is a way to save on one of your biggest food expenses like never before!

At Equal Food, we want to offer you a way to consume fresh, seasonal, and sometimes imperfect foods at consistently perfect prices! We want you to be able to maintain a balanced diet and a healthy lifestyle, regardless of the price!

Do you want to know why prices are rising so sharply? Or do you want to go straight to savings?

Agricultural and food production has been pressured by a drought with a strong impact on harvests, compounded by various other factors: the Russian invasion of Ukraine, which supplied the European Union with a large part of the cereals consumed in our domestic market; a lack of raw material supply; and increased production costs, particularly energy costs. For example, the increase in energy prices, which are very important for agri-food production, is part of a price feedback loop, that is, a cycle of price increases in international markets, impacting the final consumer.

By May 2022, the inflation rate in Portugal was already around 8%, the highest value in almost 30 years. The figures hadn't been this high since 1993. When we isolate inflation in energy prices, the rate increases to 27%, and for food products, inflation is already at 12%.

According to the latest study by Deco Proteste, the price of the basic food basket has been registering consecutive increases. In the week of June 29th to July 6th, there were further increases in supermarket prices, including on several products that... You can continue to purchase them at Equal Food for the same price. Golden apples have increased by another 10%, tomatoes by another 8%, and onions by another 7% in retail supermarkets, but not at Equal Food.

Many Equal Foodies contact us every day asking how much our baskets cost, if delivery is included, and if they are actually saving money. For these reasons, we will explain how your investment in Equal Food can mean savings of over 40% on your food expenses.

As?

To answer this, we analyzed prices at the largest supermarket chains and determined how much your Standard Basket would cost if you bought it at one of them. At the end of our research, we discovered that you actually end up saving even more money than we initially thought.

To conduct this analysis, we compared supermarket prices for over 15 products corresponding to our Fruit and Vegetable Basket (13kg) in the corresponding quantities. We concluded that if you were to buy your fruit and vegetable basket using supermarket products, you would spend around €34. Meanwhile, in large supermarkets, the ingredients in our baskets cost no more than €19, to which we added a delivery fee of around €4. In other words, while in large supermarkets you would spend around €34, at Equal Food you will not exceed €23 with home delivery. This means that the savings on our food prices is approximately 44%. And in addition to saving on food prices, you save on your trip to the supermarket, enjoying the delivery of tasty, imperfect, and fresh food directly to your kitchen.

For all these reasons, we invite you to try our Gift Baskets . There are 4 different types you can choose from depending on your preferences and dietary needs. All our food is fresh, seasonal, and (im)perfect!

If you choose to opt for a regular subscription, you'll also be betting on an additional 10% savings compared to one-off purchases, and you'll still have the opportunity to save time on a one-off purchase.

The relationship between saving money on food and food waste at home.

According to the newspaper Eco , around 40% of the food (145 million tons) produced in the European Union is not consumed, meaning that 173kg of food is wasted per person every year. If we restrict our analysis to Portugal alone, one million tons of food are wasted annually.

Considering these levels of food waste, and the fact that our food occupies one of the largest portions of the family budget, there may be a double waste occurring: financial and food waste.

That's why at Equal Food we want to find ways to reduce waste in both ways: on the one hand, less financial waste as an alternative to supermarkets and inflated prices, with savings of over 40%; on the other hand, a reduction in your environmental and food impact, using sustainable, fresh products that are 40% cheaper and would otherwise be wasted.

In addition to the cost savings, our fruit and vegetable baskets allow you to plan your meals for the week and work lunches. Planning also helps you avoid overbuying products, as often happens at the supermarket. If you have leftover products from your basket, you can always freeze them and use them the following week, or use the leftovers to maximize your food management.

Do we have products that are cheaper, but also better for the environment?

More than just enjoying lower prices, you are contributing to the fight against food waste, reducing your ecological footprint, and supporting regional farmers.

Our ecological footprint is minimized through the way we package and distribute our baskets. Our routes are optimized according to our customers' locations in order to shorten journeys and reduce carbon emissions. Furthermore, we uphold a zero-plastic policy and package our products in recycled cardboard materials.

You not only support a more sustainable distribution chain, with a final price that is cheaper than in the traditional market, but you also benefit from the flavor, freshness, and (im)perfection of our products.

The vegetables and fruits in our baskets allow you to create healthy recipes with different types of produce, such as blueberries, avocado, spinach, sweet potatoes, or almonds! We have a library full of recipes that you can put into practice.

Unlike everything else, our prices haven't gone up. We continue to guarantee a fair price for our farmers, as well as for everyone involved in our system and distribution chain. We want everyone to be able to eat healthily and affordably, regardless of inflation, oil prices, or anything else. To achieve this, we haven't compromised on carbon reduction in transportation, nor on a 99% reduction in the plastic used to package our products. We maintain our values and commitments to the environment and the planet, but above all, to you.
