40% savings

Agricultural and food production has been under pressure due to a drought that has had a major impact on harvests, in addition to a number of other factors: Russia's invasion of Ukraine, which supplied the European Union with a large proportion of the cereals consumed in our domestic market; a lack of supply of raw materials; and rising production costs, particularly energy. For example, rising energy prices, which are very important for agri-food production, are part of a price feedback chain, i.e. a cycle of rising prices on international markets, which impacts the final agent, the consumer.

By the time we reached May 2022, the inflation rate in Portugal was already around 8%, the highest figure in almost 30 years. The figures had not been this high since 1993. When we isolate inflation in energy prices, the rate increases to 27%, and in terms of food products, inflation is already at 12%.

According to the latest study by Deco Proteste, the price of the basket of essential food items has been rising consecutively. In the week of June 29 and July 6, new increases were recorded in supermarket prices, including for several products that you can continue to buy at Equal Food at the same price . Golden apples increased by a further 10%, tomatoes increased by a further 8% and onions increased by a further 7% in large-scale supermarkets, but not at Equal Food.

Many Equal Foodies contact us every day asking how much our hampers cost, whether delivery is included, and whether they are actually saving money. For these reasons, we are going to explain how your investment in Equal Food can mean a saving of over 40% on your food expenses.

As?

To answer this question, we analyzed prices in the largest supermarkets and concluded how much your Standard Basket would cost if you bought it in one of them. At the end of our research, we discovered that, in reality, you end up saving even more money than we had initially thought.

To carry out this analysis, we compared the prices in supermarkets of the more than 15 products corresponding to our Fruit and Vegetable Basket (13kg) in the corresponding quantities. Thus, we concluded that if you made your own fruit and vegetable basket with supermarket products, you would spend around €34. While this happens in large retailers, the ingredients in our baskets do not exceed €19, to which we add a delivery cost of around €4. In other words, while in large retailers you would spend around €34, at Equal Food you will not exceed a cost of more than €23 for home delivery. This means that the savings on the prices of our food amount to around 44%. And in addition to saving on the price of the food, you will save on your trip to the supermarket, enjoying a delivery of tasty, imperfect and fresh food directly to your kitchen.

save with equal food

For all these reasons, we invite you to try our Hampers . There are 4 different types that you can choose from depending on your preference and dietary needs. All our food is fresh, seasonal and (im)perfect!

If you want to opt for a regular subscription, you will also be saving an additional 10% compared to one-off purchases, and you will still have the option of saving time on a one-off purchase.

The relationship between saving on food and waste at home

According to the newspaper Eco , around 40% of the food (145 million tonnes) produced in the European Union is not consumed, meaning that 173kg of food is wasted per person every year. If we restrict our analysis to Portugal alone, one million tonnes of food is wasted every year.

If we consider these levels of food waste, and the fact that our food takes up one of the largest slices of the family financial budget, a double waste may be occurring: financial and food.

That's why at Equal Food we want to find ways for you to waste less in both ways: on the one hand, less financial waste as an alternative to supermarkets and inflated prices, with savings of over 40%; on the other hand, a reduction in your environmental and food impact, by using sustainable, fresh and 40% cheaper products that would otherwise be wasted.

In addition to this saving, our fruit and vegetable baskets allow you to plan your meals for the week and for work lunches. Planning also allows you to avoid buying too many products, as often happens in the supermarket. If you have leftover products from your basket, you can always freeze them and use them the following week, or use the leftovers to make the most of your food management.

Do we have cheaper products that are also better for the environment?

More than just enjoying lower prices, you are contributing to the fight against food waste, reducing your ecological footprint and supporting regional farmers.

Our environmental footprint is minimised through the way we pack and distribute our hampers. Our routes are optimised according to our customers’ locations, to shorten journeys and reduce carbon emissions. We also support a zero plastics policy, packaging our products in recycled cardboard materials.

Not only do you support a more sustainable distribution chain, with a cheaper final price than in the traditional market, you also benefit from the flavor, freshness and (im)perfection of our products.

The vegetables and fruits in our baskets allow you to create healthy recipes with different types of products, such as blueberries, avocado, spinach, sweet potatoes or almonds! We have a library full of recipes that you can put into practice.

Unlike everything else, our prices have not gone up. We continue to ensure a fair price for our farmers, as well as for everyone involved in our system and supply chain. We want everyone to be able to eat healthily and affordably, regardless of inflation, oil, or anything else. To achieve this, we do not give up on reducing carbon in transportation, nor on reducing the plastic used to package our products by 99%. We maintain our values and commitments to the environment and the planet, but above all to you.
