255 kg of bananas delivered to Refood

The fight against food waste often happens through quick decisions and concrete actions. This was the case with the delivery of 255 kg of bananas to three Refood hubs in Lisbon (S. Sebastião, Santa Maria Maior and Olivais).

The bananas delivered were ripe and in perfect condition for consumption, but no longer fit within the traditional commercial circuit. Situations like this are common, especially with fruit that has fast ripening cycles, where small timing differences make the difference between sale and surplus. By being rescued, these bananas moved from having no outlet to becoming an essential food resource.

A significant part of food waste happens before food even reaches the table. Strict commercial standards, large volumes or changes in demand often lead to the loss of high-quality fruit and vegetables.

The delivery of these 255 kg of bananas helped strengthen the response capacity of the Refood hubs involved, which collect food daily and prepare meals for local distribution. Bananas are a simple, energy-rich and versatile food, easily included in breakfasts, snacks or desserts, and particularly useful in food support contexts.

For Equal Food, rescuing fruit and vegetables that would otherwise be wasted is a direct way to reduce the environmental impact of the food system while supporting local social responses. Every kilo recovered represents fewer natural resources wasted and more food available for those who need it.

This delivery is another example of how waste can be turned into value through concrete actions, local partnerships and decisions made at the right moment. Because in the fight against food waste, every kilo counts.
